Hidden Gems KC began as a small but impactful idea collecting unused school supplies from a family basement and redistributing them to families in need as students returned to school following the COVID-19 pandemic. What started as a simple act of service quickly revealed a deeper need within the community.
In response, Hidden Gems KC was officially founded in 2020 by Alesea Wyatt to support youth and families in underserved communities throughout Kansas City. The organization was created to address gaps in access to educational support, mentorship, and essential resources for students facing barriers to academic and personal success.
Since its founding, Hidden Gems KC has remained committed to empowering young people through programs such as tutoring, college and career readiness support, parent advocacy, and community outreach initiatives. The organization also prioritizes connecting students and families to mental health resources and opportunities that promote overall well-being.
Through strategic partnerships with schools, community organizations, and local leaders, Hidden Gems KC continues to grow its impact—creating programs and events that help students discover their potential, build confidence, and access opportunities that lead to long-term success.

Alesea Wyatt is a dedicated youth advocate, educator, and community leader committed to expanding access and opportunity for underserved students. Recognized early for her academic promise, she was awarded the prestigious Kauffman Scholarship in the 7th grade—an achievement that helped shape her educational journey and long-term commitment to service.
Alesea went on to attend the University of Kansas on a full-ride scholarship, where she was selected as an Adidas Scholar, further distinguishing herself as a high-achieving student leader. Throughout her academic career, she remained deeply engaged in leadership and civic initiatives, serving on the Federal Reserve Student Board of Directors as well as the Kauffman Alumni Board, where she contributed to initiatives supporting student success and community advancement.
Her passion for youth development began at just 16 years old, working across numerous summer programs and before-and-after school initiatives. These early experiences, combined with the strong support systems she benefited from, gave her a unique perspective on the disparities that exist in education. Witnessing the stark differences between her own opportunities and those of her closest peers—often due to a lack of resources—became a defining moment in her journey.
Driven by both lived experience and purpose, Alesea has dedicated her career to closing opportunity gaps and creating equitable pathways for young people. Her work continues to center on empowering students, strengthening families, and building community-based solutions that ensure every child has access to the tools they need to succeed.
